Note, that in the foreground the track is composed of two types. The nearest being bullhead. Beneath the bullhead rail are cast metal chairs, which are screwed down to the wooden sleepers. The bullhead rail is held in the chairs with keys made of wood or sprung steel, which are hammered in to hold the rail tightly to the chair. The rail the bullhead is joined to is called flat-bottomed rail. Instead of chairs, baseplates are screwed down to the wooden sleepers and the flat-bottomed rail is held to them with Pandrol clips. The two rails here are held together with fishplates. Fishplates are steel plates about 2ft or more long with four or six holes. Two plates are used, one either side of the rail and bolts pass through one plate, the rails and then the second plate and held with nuts screwed tightly onto the bolts. The holes in the plate are slightly oval and a slight gap is left between the rails to allow the track to expand in hot weather.
