'Ghost Sign', Back Laburnum Avenue, Whitley Bay
This 'ghost sign' stands close to where Welch & Sons Ltd. once had a factory which was owned by John W. Welch, grandfather of the celebrity Denise Welch. It was famous for sweets like humbugs, pear drops, and the legendary Jesmona Black Bullet. The factory closed many years ago and the site, along with the adjoining former Police Station and Magistrates Court, is currently being redeveloped for housing. However, the sign lives on as a reminder to future generations of an important part of the history of Whitley Bay.
