Thorpe Pumping Station
Thorpe Pumping Station
A former Sunderland and South Shields Water Company steam pumping station that is still in use. Seen through the security fence. It originally housed a pair of Hathorn, Davey horizontal tandem compound non-rotative 'differential' steam pumping engines built in 1899. The boiler house is transversely in the background, the steam cylinders were in the lower central section and the well pumps and their bell cranks were in the tall section at the end nearest the camera. The height was to give headroom for withdrawing the pump rods.
