SU6601 : On foot from Portsmouth Harbour to London Waterloo (248)
taken 14 days ago, near to Fratton, Portsmouth, England

It recently occurred to me that walking between railway stations allows the solo walker to do linear rather than circular routes. In that spirit, I started at Portsmouth Harbour and got to Fratton. Today, for Leg Two, I am going to go via the back streets of Fratton to Ocean Park, past the old gaol, down to Milton Road, over Copnor Bridge and up to Green Lane- finally cutting through to Hilsea Railway Station.
Copnor is an area of Portsmouth located on the eastern side of Portsea Island. As Copenore, it was one of the three villages listed as being on Portsea Island in the Domesday Book. The west of the district is now a residential area of 1930s housing and the east an industrial and commercial area. It was originally intended to have a railway station; an intermediate station between Havant and Portsmouth but this was never built. Portsmouth Airport was located in the north east of the district but closed in 1972. James Callaghan, prime minister of the from 1976 until 1979 was born at 38 Funtington Road in Copnor.
