Bishop Wilberforce Memorial
Bishop Wilberforce Memorial
"Soapy Sam" was a Bishop of Oxford and known as "The Modeller of the Episcopate". He was also son of the more famous William Wilberforce, slavery reformer. He was fatally thrown from his horse here, by Abinger Hammer.
Beyond the memorial is the thickly wooded scarp slope of the North Downs.
