Charterhouse Square
The Charterhouse near Smithfield was originally a Carthusian monastery established in 1370. At the Dissolution of the Monasteries the then Prior, John Houghton, invited Thomas Cromwell to the Charterhouse to ‘discuss’ the issue of Henry VIII’s supremacy over the church in England. Cromwell responded by sending Houghton to the Tower before he was taken with several of his fellow monks to Tyburn where they were hanged, drawn and quartered. One of Houghton’s arms was then nailed to the gates as a warning to others.
