Scafell Pike
Scafell Pike viewed from Symonds Knott on Scafell.
The old spelling of the name is Scawfell and it is still known and pronounced as such by many native West Cumbrians. Before accurate surveying techniques were developed it was believed to be lower than Scafell, hence the ‘pike’ of Scafell, and it appears to be lower from many viewpoints (see NY1709 : Great End, Broad Crag, Scafell Pike and Scafell).
The rocks in the foreground form the top of Scafell Crag with the head of Deep Gill in the foreground.
