Bocking Windmill - gearing
This is a Grade I Listed weatherboarded post mill on a two storey brick roundhouse. It dates from c1680 and was moved to its current location in 1830 when the round house was added. It was handed over to the Urban District Council for preservation in 1929. The buck is now fixed and no longer revolves. The access to the buck is from the round house - an arrangement from the preservation era.
This view shows the metal windshaft passing through the centre of the wooden, clasp-arm brakewheel. The brakewheel drives the vertical shaft by means of the wallower with large wooden teeth. Above the wallower is the crown wheel with an auxiliary drive to the left. Below the wallower is the wooden governor drive pulley.
