Large parts of the pond have surface ice, although the swans and other water birds still have plenty of open water to swim and feed.

The former boating pond was naturalised in 2003 by planting round the edges and creating two islands. The pond now supports a wide variety of waterfowl and other wildlife. It was declared a Local Nature Reserve in January 2024.
