Great Central Railway - Austerities top and tail
An 0-6-0ST is on each end of this short train for the Mountsorrel branch. The leading 0-6-0ST was built by Hudswell Clarke & Co Ltd of Leeds in 1943 as works No. 1752. Following its military career it worked for the National Coal Board and was never a British Railways locomotive. It is currently carrying the BR number of a J94 class that was scrapped in 1971.
The J94 class was formed when the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) bought 75 austerities from the War Department in 1946 (before nationalisation). At the moment there are two genuine preserved J94 locomotives and less than another nine disguised as such, including this one.
