Lakeside station
Lakeside station
A steam train arriving from Haverthwaite. The railway to Lakeside was arguably the best way of accessing Lake Windermere by rail. It brought you literally to the side of the lake, at a point convenient for the lake steamers. The decision to close it was unwise, and it is fortunate that the Lakeside and Heverthwaite railway have re-opened the railway - but unfortunately, it no longer connects with the main line. If the connection could be restored, many visitors would use it, saving a large amount of carbon used in bringing private motor cars here, to say nothing of the traffic congestion.
