The Carneddau hills hold a population of several hundred, semi-feral ponies. The breed stands roughly 10-11 hands high, and has been here, isolated from other semi-wild horses for centuries, long enough that they now have distinct genetic diversity from other ponies, although they share an ancestry with the Welsh Section A ponies. They are owned and loosely managed by several local families, who bring the herd down from the hills each year, to check their general health and to sell off some individuals to keep the wild herd in balance, whilst protecting the stock by ensuring a breeding population is available in lowland farms too.
