This bridge crosses the old trackbed of the Earl of Carlisle's Waggonway which was constructed in 1799 from Brampton to serve the coalmines in the South Tyne valley LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) . Just north of this point, the waggonway connects up with the former Haltwhistle to Alston railway.
