Smoky remains of the Grand Pier
A closer view of the smouldering Grand Pier remains. The taller structure on the left is where the fire began.

I remember looking at the BBC website around 7.30am seeing one of the towers on fire, but it didn't look too bad and I assumed it would be put out. Visiting the website 45 minutes later I did a double take - flames everywhere, plumes of smoke miles high.

Seeing is believing, yet I still couldn't believe it when an hour later I was looking at the sight myself, by this time the pier had literally gone up in smoke. It was a very hot day but the scene gave me goose bumps.
