This memorial overlooking the Devil's Beef Tub is dedicated to John Hunter, a covenanter, who was killed on the opposite hillside in 1685. His grave is in Tweedsmuir Kirkyard NT1024 : The martyr's grave at Tweedsmuir Kirkyard. The inscription reads:-

On the hillside
opposite
JOHN
HUNTER
COVENANTER
was shot
by
Douglas's Dragoons
in
1685

THE GRAVE IS IN
TWEEDSMUIR KIRKYARD
