There is also a Lesser Butterfly-orchid species; see: NS3778 : Lesser Butterfly-orchid (Platanthera bifolia). The main feature that distinguishes the two is the pollinia: these are the little rod-like structures that flank the opening of the flower. In the Lesser, they are close together, and are parallel. In the Greater, as can be seen here, they are much more widely separated at the bottom, but draw close together at their tips.

The flower shown here was found in the most common habitat for this species, grassland pasture.
