Lighthouse at Orford Ness
Lighthouse at Orford Ness
Built in 1792 by Lord Braybrooke, this was initially one of two. This was taken over by Trinity House in 1837. The lighthousekeepers lived in two cottages attached to the lighthouse which were demolished in the late 1950s. The Naval Authority had command of the light during both the World Wars, operating the light only when it was needed. It was used as a navigation aid by both the Allied and German aircraft despite being camouflaged.
