A liverwort - Conocephalum conicum
The footpath here passes through dense woods, with a little stream flowing alongside it. The resulting damp shaded conditions are ideal for liverworts.
[The classification chosen for the present image is simply a convenience: this is not really a moss, although mosses and liverworts do have a similar life-cycle; they are sometimes grouped together as 'bryophytes'.]
As for the species shown here, its surface is strongly marked: it is covered with an irregular hexagonal pattern, each hexagon containing a pore. Compare NS8146 : Liverwort at Craignethan, which better shows the habit of the species.
