The Low Chibburn estate was given to the Order of St John of Jerusalem (otherwise known as The Knights Hospitallers) in 1313. They cared for the sick and also for the pilgrims who would stay here on their way to Lindisfarne.

The Order still survives today as the British Order of St John, a Royal Order of Chivalry. One of its charitable foundations is St John Ambulance.

The chapel fell into ruin, but was used as a lookout in World War II, helping to defend the Northumberland coastline against attack. You can see the brick slits that were built into the chapel walls.
