The foundation stone of Australia House, at the eastern end of the junction between Aldwych and the Strand, was laid in 1913, but the completion of the building was delayed by the First World War. It was finally opened, at an overall cost of nearly £1 million, in 1918. It is the home of the Australian High Commission.
