Logging in progress
The point shown in the photo is a crossroads of forest tracks. The path by which I am approaching leads from Balloch, and continuing straight ahead would lead to Cardross. To the left and right, other tracks lead through the forest. However, the path ahead has been closed by logging operations. One sign forbids access, while the other warns "Do not climb on timber stacks".
The Stoneymollan Road :: NS3681
This route from Balloch to the clachan of Kirkton was an old coffin road (see Link
for more details); its destination was the burial ground at St Mahew's Chapel – Link – near Cardross. The eastern part of this old road lies upon one of several parallel ridges; the underlying geology must therefore have played an important role in determining its course.
