NJ5267 : Wood Mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus)

Wood Mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus)
Wood Mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus)
This is the commonest species of mouse in the UK. It has other names including Long-tailed Field Mouse (which may be more appropriate as it generally prefers hedgerows to woodland). The distinctive features are the very long tail (as long as, or sometimes longer than, the head and body combined) fur colour, the large black eye and large ears. This one was so small - less than two inches long, excluding its tail - that I think it must be a very young one. Thanks to Duncan Goulder for help with identification.
