Hursley House was built in 1720 by Sir William Heathcote, and was extended and refitted by Lady Mary Cooper in 1902-1911. It was bought by IBM in 1958 and is now IBM Hursley Laboratory, the largest IBM software development site in Europe. It employs 2,800 people and has responsibility for a portfolio of IBM middleware components and products in the areas of Service Oriented Architecture, transaction processing, commercial messaging and storage virtualisation.
