Gisborough Priory (set of 4 images)

The Augustinian Priory of St. Mary was founded in 1152. After a fire destroyed much of the Romanesque priory in 1289 it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. After the dissolution of the monasteries in 1540 much of the stone was reused in buildings around Guisborough. It was acquired by the Chaloner family in 1540, from when its current name of Gisborough Priory dates. It is a schedule monument, still owned by the Chaloners but is under the care of English Heritage.
