Opened in September 1980, the M26 motorway in Kent serves as a link between M25 and M20.It has been called a "glorified sliproad" by some (eg Link
CBRD), since all it does is cut the corner for traffic going between the M25 southern section and M20, providing a shortcut for traffic travelling from the Channel Ports to the south and west of London. It does, however, have one unique exit which is numbered 2A to fit in with the M20's junction numbering.
Construction of the M26 began in 1977, although a route on a similar alignment was originally proposed in the Greater London Plan in 1944 as part of proposed post war improvements to London area transport network. Those proposals were developed further in the 1960s as part of the London Ringways plan and the route of the M26 at that time formed part of Ringway 4 and would have been designated as part of the M25.
