Connswater flood alert, Belfast (3-5 January 2014)
A series of photographs, taken along the tidal Connswater between the Ropeworks and Victoria Park, in the period before high water Belfast, on 3-5 January 2014. A flood alert had been issued by the police (acting on behalf of several Government bodies): “There is the potential for flooding in Belfast. Areas identified as high risk at this time are Sydenham and around the Docks area. We would ask residents in Sydenham to consider making preparations for potential flooding in the area. We will be working to provide assistance for those who may be affected . . . . . . As an update following the most recent meteorological forecast reports for Sydenham we anticipate that a number of specific streets in the lower Sydenham area will most likely experience some flooding later today (Friday 3 January). Police will be contacting individual houses affected this morning. An advice centre in the Inverary community centre has been opened”.
A higher than usual spring tide was predicted for 12.11 with the water level expected to rise 3.9 metres above chart datum (about eleven inches above the usual spring tide) backed by strong to gale-force winds and heavy rain.
In the event, although the river reached a very high level on 3 January there was no flooding.
