Chapelcross Nuclear Power Station

A selection of images of the remains of Scotland's first commercial nuclear power station and associated infrastructure.

Commissioned in 1959, and decommissioned in 2004, Chapelcross Nuclear Power Station was, and still is, a major feature of the Dumfriesshire countryside. It was built on the site of the former RAF Annan, and infrastructure from that time is still evident.

Originally operated by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), in common with Calder Hall over the Solway, it was primarily built to provide weapons-grade plutonium for the UK's nuclear weapons programme, but also provided electricity to the National Grid.

Cooling water was supplied from the River Annan at Warmanbie. Low-level liquid radioactive wastes are discharged via the five kilometre long Chapelcross Liquid Effluent Pipeline into the Solway Firth at Seafield, south of Annan, utilising the former route of the Solway Junction Railway.

On 20 May 2007, the four 91-metre cooling towers were razed by explosive demolition. Defuelling of the site was completed in February 2013.

In February 2014, it emerged that Chapelcross had been identified as a potential site to store waste from redundant nuclear-powered submarines.
