Jesse Window, St Margaret's church, Margaretting
This window shows 25 figures in random order, including David with harp, Abraham and Joseph.
It is likely to have been made by John Prudde, the King's Glazier, around 1460. Prudde was also responsible for work at Westminster and Shene Palaces in 1442 and c.1445, Eton College (1445–50), All Souls’ College Oxford (1441), and Fromond’s Chantry in Winchester College (1443–4).
The representation of a Jesse tree shows a symbolic tree or vine with spreading branches to represent the genealogies in accordance with Isaiah's prophecy.
Jesse is shown reclining at the base of the window and from him springs the trunk of a tree or vine which ascends, ratcheting either side. On the branches, usually surrounded by scrolling tendrils of foliage, are figures representing the ancestors of Christ. The trunk ascends vertically to Mary and Christ at the top.
Underneath to the left is Jacob and Joseph, and to the right on the same level Abiud and Zorobabel, lower down is Zadok and Nathan, David and Solomon, Obed and Nasson and Abraham and Methusela plus others, some of which are depicted in stained glass at Canterbury.
