Church of St Michael-in-Lewes
The church has a round tower dating from the 12th century. This is topped with a shingled spire.
The nave originally had lean-to aisles in the 13th century, and the octagonal piers and arches of the south arcade on the west side from the 14th century.
The chancel was probably rebuilt in the 14th century.
By the time of the Reformation, Saint Michael's was in a deplorable condition. In 1748 extensive building works were necessary which cost £1366.
The south aisle was extended south of the chancel using oak posts inside a decorative skin for the piers. Externally Flintwork was used, as a sufficient quality of bricks could not be found.
The church was further changed in 1878 and an apse was added to the chancel. Further beautification continued with the addition of stained-glass windows and the reopening of the 15th century doorway to the west.
St Michael's contains a monument to Sir Nicholas Pelham and his wife Anne, and also two brasses, one of a Knight dating from 1430 and the other of an early Rector from circa 1457.
The organ was originally from 1892 by Hunter & son, now by F.H. Browne of Canterbury.
