Shared description
St Mary's Abbey, York
The original abbey on the site was founded in 1055. The surviving ruins date back to the rebuilding programme begun in 1271 and finished by 1294.
The abbey was closed during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries and was subsequently destroyed.
The remains are Grade I-listed (Historic England List Entry Number: 1257128 Link
