Shared description
St Olave's church, York
Founded in 1055 by Siward, Earl of Northumbria, although nothing of this church remains.
The church is situated adjacent to the ruined St Mary's Abbey to the south.
It consists of western tower, nave with aisles of 6 bays, 2 bay chancel, organ chamber south chapel and vestry.Most is from the 15th C.
The outside has embattled parapets with gargoyles and pinnacles. The tower has four crocketted pinnacles. At one time there was a clerestory but this was removed in refurbishment of 1720.
The chancel was extended in 1879 under the influence of the Oxford movement.
The nave has north and south aisles with a south chapel at the east end. This contains a window by Harry Stammers and James Powell and Co.
The organ is originally by Walker.
