Haydon Wick Flood Alleviation Scheme, Swindon
The scheme came about following the major flooding event of July 2007 which affected many parts of southern England. The previously unremarkable Haydon Wick Brook, little more than a ditch most of the time, couldn't cope with the large amounts of unseasonable rainfall and it was clear something had to be done. Cutting a long story short, a scheme was initiated, designed and executed at a cost of about £6m to protect various properties from the risk of future flood events. The design brief for the new flood defences was to protect 118 residential properties, four commercial properties and an electricity sub-station. The defences are intended to protect these properties from a 1-in-100 year flood. The work was underway by July 2012 and was officially opened on 1st November 2013, just in time for the heavy rainfall events of early 2014 which proved the effectiveness of the scheme.
