Severndroog Castle
Severndroog Castle is a tower in gothic style near the summit of Shooters Hill in the borough of Greenwich. It is neither a castle in the sense of a fortification, nor strictly a folly (since it was not built as a ruin).
The tower was intended as a memorial to Sir William James. His wife Lady James wanted to celebrate his (later controversial) conquest for the East India Company of the fortress of Severndroog (Sevarnadurg) on the west coast of Malabar, India in 1755. The tower was completed in 1784.
The 60ft high tower itself, which has an unusual shape (triangular in plan with turreted towers at each corners and a hexagonal room on each of its three floors) is grade 2* listed (list entry number 1289792). The original architect was Richard Jupp.
The tower passed through various public and private ownerships - a full history is on the official website Link
