Seacombe Drill Hall

Seacombe Drill Hall is first shown on the 1935 O.S. map on Riverview Road, and opposite the Public Baths, which first appear on the 1911 map. Despite the hall only appearing on 1935 map, the 1911 census records the "Drill Hall, Riverview Rd, Seacombe, Cheshire", and the occupants of the house as "Frederick Thomas Rees, ASM, RGA, Government Instructor, Drill Hall", and his family. Frederick's 4 year old daughter was born in Swansea in Spring 1907, but his last son was born in Wallasey in the Summer of 1909, which suggests that the hall may have been built around 1907-09, and that Frederick was the first instructor. (The census references are Cheshire, Poulton with Seacombe, Enumeration District 33, Page 593) For historic reasons the area is known as Guinea Gap and the drill hall building is now known as the Guinea Gap Recreation Centre. The public baths opposite are run by Wirral Council and are known as Guinea Gap Leisure Centre. The brickwork of the drill hall itself suggests that it has all been rebuilt, but the main house structure at the southern end still appears to be original.
