Richard III - the King under the car park

The last Plantaganet monarch, King Richard III LinkExternal link was killed on 22nd August 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth in Leicestershire, effectively ending the Wars of the Roses. On 25th August 1485 his body was interred in the choir of the church of Greyfriars in Leicester. The Franciscan Friary LinkExternal link was dissolved in 1538 and the site was successively built over in the following 474 years, latterly with a school in 1864 which became Council offices in the 20th century.
On 24th August 2012, 527 years after Richard’s death, Leicester City Council, The University of Leicester and the Richard III Society announced that an archaeological search for the remains of King Richard III would be undertaken on the site. In September, the site of the Friary church choir and human remains were discovered under the car-park of the council offices. The skeleton was of an adult male with a scoliosis of the spine and numerous bladed weapon injuries, consistent with known physical characteristics of the king and nature of his death. DNA from the skeleton was matched with that of known descendants and on 4th February 2013 the University of Leicester confirmed that the skeleton was beyond reasonable doubt that of King Richard III.
On 26th July 2014, the King Richard III Visitor Centre ‘Dynasty, Death and Discovery’ LinkExternal link opened in the former council buildings and his remains are to be re-interred in Leicester Cathedral in Spring 2015.
