The London Marathon was first run in 1981, and by 2010 a total of £500 million was estimated to have been raised for charities. After many years of sponsorship by Flora, Virgin took over as principal sponsor in 2010.

The route starts in Greenwich Park and on nearby Blackheath, then takes in Woolwich, Greenwich and Rotherhithe before crossing the iconic Tower Bridge to do a circuit of the Isle of Dogs then head back into central London and the finish in St James's Park.
