Denton Free Library and Technical School

Denton Lads' club was founded in a row of cottages on Peel Street. Needing enlarged premises a new building was built in front of the cottages and became the south wing of the final building. Councillor Edwin Oldham JP laid the foundation stone of the extension, the north wing, which was to house the library, on the 27 February 1897. On completion of the extension and other alterations, William Mather MP opened the new Free Library and Technical School on the 18 January 1900. To commemorate the Festival of Britain in 1951, the hall on the ground floor of the south wing was reconstructed and named the Festival Hall. For more details see LinkExternal link

The Festival Hall is currently used as an events venue.

Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council announced "Denton Library is to relocate to Denton Town Hall as part of a wider programme to reduce the number and costs of Council-owned buildings. Tameside Council's priority is to save services over buildings in its challenge to meet £142m Government funding cuts to its budget. Denton library is moving as part of this strategy and will in fact be going back to its original roots as the service started life in a room in the town hall in 1888. To enable this work to be done the current library facility will close completely on Saturday 6 December 2014 at 3.00pm and re-open on Monday 5 January 2015 in the town hall."

The library service has now moved SJ9295 : Entrance to Denton Town Hall/Library/Police Point.
