Replica Roman inscribed stones, Chapel Street

The inscribed stones built into the boundary wall that separates the east side of King George's Field from Chapel Street in Appleby were made by the former headmaster of Appleby Grammar School, Reginald Bainbrigg (1544/45-1612/13).

In 1602, his collection of replica and original Roman inscribed stones were stored in a small building in his house in Appleby. Most of the stones are now lost apart from 16 built into the wall of Chapel Street close to the location of Appleby's former Grammar School building. Some of the original inscriptions were found at Kirkby Thore and Whitley Castle. One of Bainbrigg's inscriptions commemorates the founding of Appleby Grammar School in the C15th and another gives details of his own life.

Many stones of the original collection are now missing and the inscriptions of those remaining are now very eroded and hard to read.
