Beehive Place, Brixton

Beehive Place is a short and narrow back-street with one end off Brixton Station Road, and the other end off the main Brixton Road.

Other Geograph contributors seemed to have missed it so far, so on 2015 I went myself to see whether the old Beehive Mission building (a licensed place of worship in St Paul’s parish at least from 1916 to 1937) survived. I thought that one or other of the older buildings on the west side of the street might be it.

More recently (2018) I found from the 25-inch maps on the National Library of Scotland website that the mission was on the east side of the street, on the north corner of Industry Terrace. This is now occupied by the much more recent Recreation Centre. The date of demolition of the old Mission is unknown but the Recreation Centre opened in 1985. Industry Terrace still appeared on a 1951 map so it could conceivably have survived at least that long.

It is not clear whether the street was named after the mission, or the nearby beehive pub that still survives Link - or vice-versa.

About shared descriptions

These Shared Descriptions are common to multiple images.

For example, you can create a generic description for an object shown in a photo, and reuse the description on all photos of the object. All descriptions are public and shared between contributors, i.e. you can reuse a description created by others, just as they can use yours.
