The Athenaeum building

The Category A Listed Athenaeum building LinkExternal link occupies a narrow site on Buchanan Street. It was designed in 1891-3 by Sir John James Burnett LinkExternal link in a style described by Historic Scotland as "eclectic with Renaissance detail, pioneer vertical (elevator)".

The building was designed as a school for drama students, a purpose which it served until 2008 when the RSAMD moved to their new premises in nearby Renfrew Street. The building contained a theatre, billiard room, dining room and gymnasium.

After 2008, it operated for a few years as "Razzle Dazzle", a discount fashion and home store. In 2013 the building was converted to the Glasgow Hard Rock Cafe LinkExternal link .

About shared descriptions

These Shared Descriptions are common to multiple images.

For example, you can create a generic description for an object shown in a photo, and reuse the description on all photos of the object. All descriptions are public and shared between contributors, i.e. you can reuse a description created by others, just as they can use yours.
