Whitfield Valley Local Nature Reserve
Whitfield Valley is an urban LNR declared by Stoke-on-Trent City Council in 1991. It was formerly the site of much heavy industry including the Chatterley Whitfield colliery which closed in 1976. The Ford Green brook flows through the valley, which includes areas of grassland, hay meadow, heathland, hedgerow, ponds and scattered trees, and is criss-crossed by footpaths. Ford Green reedbed, at the southern end of the site, is an SSSI. At the northern end of the reserve is the spoil tip from the former colliery.
