Castle Carlton
The motte and double bailey castle is either an 11th century post-Conquest fortification raised by Ansgot or a 12th century castle by Ralph de la Haye, an active supporter of Stephen during The Anarchy.
The village of Castle Carlton was established in the mid 12th century about 350m NE of the castle.
Substantial earthworks of the castle remain, with a 40m diameter, 8m high motte surrounded by a complex of ditches and banks. The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

About shared descriptions
These Shared Descriptions are common to multiple images.
