St Cuthbert’s Church, Bewcastle
The 7th Century Bewcastle Cross is prominent in the graveyard. In addition to runic inscriptions and vine-scroll decorations, the cross also features carvings of John the Baptist (holding the Lamb of God), Christ as King and a figure believed to be St John the Evangelist. The meaning of the runic inscriptions is not certain and may read “This token of victory, Hwaetred, Waethgar set up in memory of Alefrid ... Pray for them, their sins and their souls!
