New water feature, Swindon

This artwork has only recently been installed and switched on. The name cut into the side of the piece is ‘Stacked Fountain’ but the local newspaper says it is called ‘Crumpled Water Walls’. It was commissioned by the company ‘Swindon Forward’, an ‘arm’s length’ company who are responsible for driving Swindon’s regeneration and which is wholly owned by Swindon Borough Council. It cost £240,000, was designed by Walter Jack, made by Richard Stump and John Hall and cut by Premier Laser. It is fabricated from 1000 slices of stainless steel. Predictably it raised ignorant whinges from a few mean-minded local residents banging the old drum of wasting taxpayers’ money; equally predictably some knuckle-draggers thought it would be fun to put washing up liquid in it, quickly sorted by putting an anti-foaming agent into the water.
