The Newport Medieval Ship
The Newport Medieval Ship was discovered in June 2002 when excavations were being made before the construction of The Riverfront Arts Centre on the west bank of the River Usk Link .
The vessel is the most complete surviving example of a ship from the 15th century.
Examination of artefacts found within the structure suggest that it was trading with Portugal.
In the years since its discovery, the recording and conserving of over 2000 ship timbers and artefacts discovered during the excavation has continued.
It is hoped that it can be re-assembled and displayed in a purpose built museum in Newport.
In November 2023 it was announced using the latest research techniques it has been found that timbers from the hull of the former wine-trading vessel were made from oak trees that were felled in the winter of 1457-58.
