Nuneaton Civic Centre

After buildings in Church Street, Nuneaton, had been severely damaged in World War II, the town council took the opportunity of replanning the area to form a 'civic centre'.
The master-planning was undertaken and new buildings designed by the architect Frederick Gibberd (who grew up in Coventry and had family in Nuneaton) in the 1950's and 1960's. A police station, magistrates courts, library, government offices, council flats and a new ring road were built.
It has been said that the design of the library (arguably Gibberd's most interesting work in the area) was inspired by the work of the French architect Ledoux.
The police station and magistrates courts were demolished c 2007 after the opening of the new Justice Centre, and the library was under threat of replacement by a new college development, although that has now been shelved (2010).
