Murals on The Meadows
A set of five murals created in 2014 that depict local landmarks and events, some of which date back to the ‘International Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art’, which was held on The Meadows in 1886. It was sponsored by The Friends of the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links, and funded by the South Central Neighbourhood Partnership, with a contribution from the Edinburgh Evening News, and the balance was funded by Scottish Power, on whose substation the murals are mounted. The words are by the poet Rachel Woolf, with extracts from Robert Burns and Muriel Spark [the 'Prime of Miss Jean Brodie']. The artist was Astrid Jaekel, who came to Edinburgh from Germany to study at Edinburgh College of Art Link

The murals celebrate four of the Meadows Walks :-
The Middle Meadow Walk was the first of the Meadow walks, set out by Sir Thomas Hope when the parkland was created out of a boggy loch. It was praised as standing comparison to London - 'Mr Hope has beautified the meadow wonderfully and made it another St James's Park.’
The Boys Brigade Walk was set out in 1954 to celebrate the birth of Boys Brigade founder Sir William A. Smith in 1854.
Coronation Walk commemorates the coronation of George VI in 1937
Jawbone Walk is called after the whalebone arch at the Melville Drive end of the path. The whalebones date back to the 1886 exhibition.
