Scarborough Castle

The Castle was originally built in Norman times on a promontory above what we now know as Scarborough. The site, with its fairly level top, commanding views over the harbour and defence potential, had attracted settlements since Iron Age times, and was used by the Romans as a signal station. It is now in the care of English Heritage and open to the public (for a fee) during daylight hours.

For a more detailed description of the history and archaeology of the site, see the Wikipedia entry LinkExternal link or the official description as a Scheduled Ancient Monument LinkExternal link
