The Britons Protection
It was witness to the Peterloo "massacre" in 1819, and the pub name is recorded as the Britons Protection in 1820. It is not known what the earlier name was. The meeting broken up by Hussars was on St Peter's Fields, the site of the later Free Trade Hall, and of Manchester Central station. The day's events are recorded inside the pub in a series of anodyne murals of dubious quality in the corridor leading to the front door. They cannot be described as a graphic account of the incident, though many famous people are depicted and one of the panels is of a later royal visit passing by.
The current interior largely dates from the 1930s, with sumptuous panelling and ceilings in the main bar.
Despite the incongruity with the large conference and concert venues and luxury hotels that surround it the Britons Protection retains the feel of a local pub, dedicated to selling real ale and an extraordinary range of whiskys, served in little snug rooms and a more recent enclosed rear yard. The food offering is confined to pies, which they have invariably run out of whenever I visit.
