Colliston Castle
The castle was originally a Z-plan tower, that is, a block with two round towers at opposite corners. Both towers had square chambers at the top, but only one of these survives. It seems to be generally accepted that the castle was built in the 16th century, but there is a charming lack of unanimity about the actual date of construction, some sources saying as early as 1535, others saying 1583. It is said that the castle was built by Cardinal Beaton, who also owned Ethie Castle a few miles away. The Cardinal granted the lands of Colliston to John Guthrie and his wife Isabella Ogilvy in 1544, and the castle remained in Guthrie hands until 1684, when it was sold to one Dr Gordon. It was in the ownership of the Chaplin family for some 200 years before being bought by Major Bruce. It changed hands more than once in the 20th century. See Link
